The normal thyroid gland in the adult consists of two conical lateral lobes joined by an isthmus that lies over the second and third tracheal rings opposite the fifth, sixth, and seventh cervical vertebrae. Ectopic thyroid tissue may be found anywhere along the line of the obliterated thyroglossal duct.
